So when a 20-25 y/o hears a song off an album like American Idiot or Blink-182 it invokes all those childhood memories of a time that is quite literally gone and irrecoverable except in memory. I think another contributing factor is that the early-2000s was the first aesthetic that generation could really tangibly identify, and now it’s a largely lost aesthetic? I mean I’ve seen some aspects of the early-2000s persist in towns and suburbs tucked away in different parts of the U.S., but by-and-large the world has moved on to a new aesthetics (a new era?). These aesthetics, even if only exposed by proxy, will become integral to how a child in their formative years’ tastes will develop later in life. Older brothers or sisters might’ve also had the dyed hair or the angsty punk/emo/alt fashion sense that came with the scene. It’s music that their parents or older siblings would’ve been listening to, playing in the car or blasting in their room behind a closed door with a “DO NOT ENTER” sign hung on it.

When it comes to pop punk specifically, while they might not have been old enough to take part in the scene directly, they were still existing adjacent to it. Regardless of what the reality of the world was in the early 2000s, someone who was a child then is going to remember it in a more fond light. HEY!!
